     James O'Brien was born on 24 June 1837 in County Tipperary, Ireland.1,2,3 He married Ellen Day, daughter of Darby Day and Johanna Murnane, on 9 February 1861 in Henry, Marshall County, Illinois, United States; Winesses were Thomas Murnane and Mary Day.4,5 James O'Brien died on 19 November 1914 in Scranton, Greene County, Iowa, United States, at age 77; The obituary states: "He contracted a severe cold on the evening of Halloween day, and was on the street for the last time on election day. The cold developed into bronchial pneumonia, which was the cause of his death."2 He was buried in Scranton Township Cemetery, Scranton, Greene County, Iowa, United States; Casket bearers were P. J. Horan, J. B. Kelley, J. W. Holden, Wm. Lawless of Chatsworth, Illinois, Daniel Healy and J. J. Finnegan.6
     He appeared on the census of 2 June 1860 in Senachwine Township, Putnam County, Illinois, United States; James O'Brien is living in the household of George Sparling and as a farm laborer. Next door is living a John O'Brien, aged 26, a farmer and head of the household.7 He appeared on the census of 20 August 1870 in Senachwine Township, Putnam County, Illinois, United States.8 He appeared on the census of 15 June 1880 in Saratoga Township, Marshall County, Illinois, United States.9 He appeared on the census of 5 June 1900 in Willow Township, Greene County, Iowa, United States.10 He appeared on the census of 29 April 1910 in the household of Thomas O'Brien in Willow Township, Greene County, Iowa, United States.11
