Ellen O'Dea was born in January 1816 in County Limerick, Ireland; Although the census records show a variety of dates for her birth, the 1860 Federal Census estimates her birth date as 1820. In addition, her tombstone indicates that she was born in 1816. Because she appears to have been born last, this leads to the suggestion that a younger sister Ellen, born circa 1798, died.1,2 She married Timothy Dorsey, son of Patrick Dorsey and Ellen O'Brien, on 14 February 1847 in Kilteely and Dromkeen, County Limerick, Ireland; Witnesses at the marriage were Darby O'Dea and Thomas Bartley.3 Ellen O'Dea died on 18 April 1904 in Henry, Marshall County, Illinois, United States, at age 88.2 She was buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Henry, Marshall County, Illinois, United States.2
She immigrated with Timothy Dorsey on 2 July 1849 in New York, New York, United States; Timothy and Ellen Dorsey arrived in New York on the Ivanhoe. No children are listed in the manifest. The name is listed as Dacey in the index.4 Ellen O'Dea appeared on the census of 3 September 1850 in the household of Timothy Dorsey in Towanda, Bradford County, Pennsylvania, United States; Living with Timothy and Ellen are two teenages sons from his previous marriages--Patrick (aged 13) and William (aged 10.)5 Ellen O'Dea purchased land in Henry, Marshall County, Illinois, United States on 1 May 1857. Both Ellen and Darby purchase land on the same street on the same day.6 She appeared on the census of 3 June 1860 in Henry, Marshall County, Illinois, United States.7 She witnessed the marriage of David Hickey and Mary Agnes Day on 13 November 1866 in Henry, Marshall County, Illinois, United States; Witnesses were Thomas Brown and Helena Darsey (her father's sister).8,9 Ellen O'Dea appeared on the census of 11 June 1880 in Henry, Marshall County, Illinois, United States; Ellen is living on School Street in Henry.10 She appeared on the census of 4 June 1900 in the household of Katherine Frances Dorsey in Henry, Marshall County, Illinois, United States; Kate and her mother Ellen are living on School Street in Henry. Kate is working as a hotel cook.11 Ellen O'Dea sold land in Henry, Marshall County, Illinois, United States on 18 April 1904. After Ellen's death, the land she owned on School Street was transferred to her daughter, Kate, by the remaining heirs, probably Margaret and possibly Ellen.12
