     Matthew Ryan was born on 19 July 1858 in Camp Grove, Marshall County, Illinois, United States.2 He married Johanna Day, daughter of Darby Day and Johanna Murnane, on 6 January 1884 in St. Patrick's Church, Camp Grove, Marshall County, Illinois, United States; Standing up for Matthew and Johanna were John Colgan and Mary Colgan.3 Matthew Ryan died on 31 March 1910 in Camp Grove, Marshall County, Illinois, United States, at age 51; Matthew's death was the result of a farm accident. Along with his sons, Bert and Leo, he was pulling hedge with a stump puller on his farm. A chain broke and a lever struck him below the knees, shattering both legs. He was carried home where a local Doctor was called for. Because of his weak heart, the Doctor did not try to set the legs. Because of the extent of the wound, amputation was needed, but because of his weakened condition, it was delayed. Within a day or two, he died.4 He was buried on 2 April 1910 in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Camp Grove, Marshall County, Illinois, United States.2
     He appeared on the census of 20 June 1860 in the household of Anthony Ryan in La Prairie Township, Stark County, Illinois, United States.5 Matthew Ryan appeared on the census of 5 August 1870 in the household of Anthony Ryan in Penn Township, Stark County, Illinois, United States.6 Matthew Ryan appeared on the census of 15 June 1880 in the household of Anthony Ryan in Valley Township, Stark County, Illinois, United States.7 Matthew Ryan appeared on the census of 23 June 1900 in Valley Township, Stark County, Illinois, United States.8
