It is easy to understand why Michael emigrated with his family to America. He was considered, under German law, an illegitimate child because his father refused to marry his mother. Under German law, an illegitimate person could not own or inherit land. He was, rather, restricted to manual labor (working for others) for making a living. As such, he would have been a part of the "lower" class in Germany with no prospects for advancement. Only in America could he own land himself and pass it on to his children. This was the "American dream" that drew Michael and his family to Iowa in the 1880's.4
