| Birth* | John Ryan was born circa 1820 in County Tipperary, Ireland.1,2 |
| He was the son of Cornelius Ryan and Hannah MacDonald.1 | |
| Marriage* | John Ryan married Winnefred Ryan, daughter of John Ryan and Mary Brown, in 1842 in Ireland.3 |
| Cen-Head* | John Ryan was head of household on the US Census Population Schedule 1860 of July 10, 1860, Valley Township, at Stark County, Illinois.3 |
| Cen-Head* | John Ryan was head of household on the Illinois State Census 1865 of July 3, 1865, Valley Township, at Stark County, Illinois. The census records lists two males less than 10 (John and ??), four females less than 10 (Hannah [?], Johanna, Mary and Bridget), one female between 30 and 40 (Winnifred) and one male between 50 and 60 (John).4 |
| Cen-Head* | John Ryan was head of household on the US Census Population Schedule 1870 of July 28, 1870, Valley Township, at Stark County, Illinois. John's wife Winnefred is not listed in this census record. However, there is a Winnie Ryan, aged 35, working as a domestic servant in the household of Mary Wallace in Sterling, Illinois--just north of Stark County.5 |
| Marriage* | John Ryan married Winnefred Ryan, daughter of John Ryan and Mary Brown, on November 7, 1878 in Valley Township, Stark County, Illinois. The marriage of John and Winnefred Ryan has some unusual characteristics. After having two children by 1847, they have no other children until 1854. The reason for this may have been miscarriages. Then in 1870, we find that John and Winnefred are living apart. She is living next to her brother William and seems to have the youngest child (Hanora) with her. All the rest of the children who were not married by then are with John. There are no more children after 1865. Then, in 1878, John and Winnefred re-marry. It is interesting to note that the 1880 census lists Winnefred's age as 45 when we would have expected 55. The age for Winnefred on the marriage certificate indicates that in 1878 she was 46 years old. This agrees with the 1880 census. Either there are two similar mistakes in these two records, or Winnefred is shaving about 10 years off of her age, or--and this cannot be proven--this Winnefred is a different Winnefred Ryan altogether. Note also that the 1878 record, a civil record (there is no Church record for thsi event) indicates that this is John's third marriage and Winnefred's second. This is consistent with a reconciliation. The likelihood that John would have married a second Winnefred Ryan seems highly unlikely. It seems, rather, that John and Winnefred may have had some marital problems for a time--probably 1870 to 1878 when they were reconciled. It is also interesting to note that both John and Winnefred are buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery outside of Camp Grove, but that they are not buried next to one another. They have identical (rather large stones), but Winnefred is buried next to her brother William while John is buried about 50 feet away all by himself.1 |
