Matthew Ryan was born on July 19, 1858 in Camp Grove, Marshall County, Illinois.4 He was the son of Anthony Ryan and Mary Manton.2,3 Matthew Ryan married Johanna Day, daughter of Darby Day and Johanna Murnane, on January 6, 1884 in St. Patrick Church, Camp Grove, Marshall County, Illinois. Standing up for Matthew and Johanna were John Colgan and Mary Colgan.5,6 Matthew Ryan died on March 31, 1910 in Camp Grove, Marshall County, Illinois, at age 51. Matthew's death was the result of a farm accident. Along with his sons, Bert and Leo, he was pulling hedge with a stump puller on his farm. A chain broke and a lever struck him below the knees, shattering both legs. He was carried home where a local Doctor was called for. Because of his weak heart, the Doctor did not try to set the legs. Because of the extent of the wound, amputation was needed, but because of his weakened condition, it was delayed. Within a day or two, he died.7 He was buried on April 2, 1910 in St. Patrick Cemetery, Marshall County, Illinois.4,8
