James Day was born on January 29, 1851 in Minden Township, Montgomery County, New York.¹ He was the son of Darby Day and Johanna Murnane. James Day married Mary Ellen Ryan on April 1, 1875 in Camp Grove, Marshall County, Illinois. Standing up for James and Mary Ellen were Thomas Ryan and Margaret Day.² James Day died on December 18, 1937 in Peoria, Peoria County, Illinois, at age 86.¹ He was buried on December 20, 1937 in St. Mary Cemetery, Peoria, Peoria County, Illinois.¹
