John O'Dea was born on 23 May 1848 in New York, New York; Darby's and Johanna's first son Thomas was named after his paternal grandfather and died (probably in 1848). There is a fair amount of evidence to suggest that Johanna's father was James Murnane, and that she and Darby named their third son James after his maternal grandfather. This leaves the mystery of who the second son John was named after. With the death of Thomas, it is likely he would have been named after someone in his father's family. In many cases, in such a situation, a second child would be named Thomas as well. But in this case, Darby and Johanna named their second son John. Lacking any birth record for John, we cannot tell if his name was simply John or perhaps John Thomas or perhaps Thomas John.1 He married Bridget Cooney on 13 September 1872 in Marshall County, Illinois; Witnesses for the marriage were John Moloney and Mary Ryan.2,3,4 John O'Dea died on 13 February 1929 in Marshall County, Illinois, at age 80.1 He was buried on 16 February 1929 in St. Dominic's Cemetery, Wyoming, Stark County, Illinois.1
